Paediatric medicine issues and gaps from healthcare workers point of view: survey results and a narrative review from the global accelerator for paediatric formulations project

The WHO Model List of Essential Medicines for Children (EMLc) has not been systematically revised in the last few years. We conducted a survey addressed to healthcare professionals prescribing, preparing, or administering medicines children and narrative review identify problematic paediatric formulations missing all therapeutic fields inform EMLc 2023. A total 285 physicians (63%), 28 nurses (6%) 142 pharmacists (31%), mostly working hospital setting, reported at least one medicine. 290 were as (completely child-appropriate formulation). top three most mentioned ciprofloxacin together with phenobarbital omeprazole. 387 (34% oral liquid formulations, 34% tablets, 18% parenteral preparations. Mostly products antibacterials (27%), cardiovascular (11%) antivirals (11%). obtained responses show perspective workers around world, particularly European region (25%), African (24%), Region Americas (19%), limited representation from Northern Africa Middle East. Our results need be analysed outputs other ongoing works before specific can enter WHO-hosted Global Accelerator Paediatric network prioritisation process. Efforts develop appropriate should accelerated so that uncertainties associated off-label drug preparation use are minimised, benefits optimised.
